A 12-year-old known to the Department of Community Services is about to become one of NSW's youngest mothers.

The girl's older boyfriend had been allowed by her mother to move into their home and the pair slept in the same bed before her father took custody of her in March, The Daily Telegraph reports.

Her father, who is separated from her mother, had pleaded with the department but they did not respond to the situation, the report said.

The girl is reportedly about halfway through her pregnancy and will become one of the state's youngest mothers.

A department spokeswoman told the paper the department was working with the girl and her family.

"DoCS had received reports about this girl previously," the spokeswoman said.

"Because of more urgent cases, the department took some action to investigate this case, but acknowledges more intensive casework could have been done."

My ex has done the same thing - let my daughter's boyfriends sleep in the same room / bed (for obvious reasons) in her house since they were 13yo.

Under state law (at the very least) this is illegal - I notified DOCS as such but nothing has ever been done, probably because I'm an irrate father according to 1 female DOCS worker.

By DOCS NOT investigating and putting a stop to this matter, they become a party in support of the matter through their inaction and (at the time) anti-father bias.

Opposition community services spokeswoman Pru Goward said all DoCS had to do was call in outside help. "They just had to admit they couldn't cope," she said on Fairfax radio.

Yeah, right, Pru, like when you failed to call in outside help for men when you were Anti-Discrimination Commissioner. But then you never admitted that you couldn`t (or wouldn`t ) cope.

my wife posted a reply on the daily telegrath post but for some reason they didnt publish it .... ?
this is where it comes back to the family law... Why society or the law say the mother was best for the child , which now is clear wasn't case !
That this child has the right to even be having sex at that age is an understatement.
We went through the ringer with my daughter last yr , which i have posted some issues , she was a very messed up kid because of all the emotional turmoil from being with her mother . She still is unsettled and moves on every 6 months or so from what ever family she goes too.
This is where the family law needs to be reveiwed , not every child needs to be with the mother !

I watched today tonight last night where they reported that young teenagers who had babies fared better later on in life.

Does this mean that we should now lower the age of consent in the best interests of the children??

Jeepers

PS: I should also add there was no mention that this girl was in the "sights" of DOCS in the care of her psychotic mother

I posted a comment in the paper, it wasnt published either, probly because i pointed the finger at and blamed the irresponsilbe unfit parent Mother. Because we all know Mums are never to blame for thier actions, and i dont know why DOCS are to blame either.

Hunter babies caught in teen mum trap: report
BY GABRIEL WINGATE-PEARSE
18/06/2009 4:00:00 AM

CHILDREN born in the Hunter New England region are more likely to have a teenage mother than the average Australian child, increasing their chances of living in social and economic disadvantage.

They are also more likely to be born underweight, putting them at greater risk of ill health, disability and death than other infants, according to an Australian Institute of Health and Welfare report released yesterday.

A Picture of Australia's Children 2009 says there were about 11,900 babies born to teenage mothers nationally in 2006, a rate of 17 live births per 1000 females aged 15-19 years.

In the Hunter New England Health region the rate was 23.9 babies, according to NSW Health statistics.

The report associates teenage motherhood with significant long-term risks to both mother and child, saying teenagers often delayed confirming their pregnancies and seeking antenatal care, and more often engaged in risky behaviour, including smoking and drinking alcohol while pregnant.

Teenage parenthood "often means interrupted schooling, a high risk of lone parenthood, greater dependence on government assistance, increased problems in engaging with the labour market, and poverty, and as a result, many young mothers were unable to meet the financial and emotional needs of their babies," it says.

Children born to teenagers develop more behavioural problems, tend to be more impulsive than children of older mothers and are more likely to be born into, and live in, social and economic disadvantage.

Australia's teenage birth rate ranked 20th of 30 OECD countries in 2002, with a substantially higher rate than Korea (2.7), Switzerland (5.5) and Japan (6.2), which were the best-performing OECD countries.

Teenage birth rates were highest in Mexico (51), Turkey (49) and the US (43).

The good news was that Australian children's death rate has declined, mostly due to fewer injury-deaths, and there has been a falling trend in asthma hospitalisations and improved survival rates for leukaemia.

Yet there were rising rates of severe disability, diabetes and dental decay among six-year-olds.

The report says far too many children are fat, spent too long in front of television or computer screens, didn't eat enough vegetables and were assaulted or homeless
